Why FORMAT-Pro?

Facilities are important to education, community, health, and resilience, yet there is no national data on our public school infrastructure.

Why FORMAT-Pro

PK-12 School Facilities Matter

Every school day, nearly 50 million students and 6 million adults are in 100,000 public schools, encompassing an estimated 8.3 billion square feet of buildings on nearly 2 million acres of land.

High-quality facilities help improve student achievement, reduce truancy and suspensions, improve staff satisfaction and retention, and support property values. They are integral to educational equity and community resilience.

In fiscal year 2024, state and local governments invested more capital in PK-12 public school facilities than in any other infrastructure sector outside of highways. U.S. communities spent $150 billion on PK-12 public school facilities.

Responsible Facilities Stewardship Requires Good Data

Facilities standards and management are becoming more complex. Public school infrastructure costs have risen dramatically over the decades. Communities need more value from current spending and must identify new revenue sources.

Despite the importance of this infrastructure and the enormous investment made by U.S. taxpayers, there is no comprehensive and comparable information about public school buildings. States and districts often spend scarce resources building separate information systems.

FORMAT-Pro helps close this gap. It provides a shared foundation for organizing, comparing, analyzing, and communicating school facilities information.

Our Vision

To establish a trusted, connected national platform that transforms educational facilities data into practical insight for planning, investment, stewardship, and more equitable learning environments.

Educational leaders and communities have the data and information tools they need to manage healthy, safe, and educationally appropriate public school buildings and grounds that are also environmentally sound, energy efficient, resilient, and community assets.

Purpose & Goals

Standardize

Establish a unified typology and language for school buildings and grounds to ensure data is portable and analyzable nationwide.

Simplify

Provide tools to streamline data organization, cleaning, alignment, analysis, and reporting.

Save Costs

Create a national inventory of public school facilities to make their data public and actionable for planning and oversight.

Ecosystem of Tools

These tools work together to help users collect, organize, validate, manage, and analyze PK-12 school facilities data, providing a unified platform for data stewardship, reporting, and decision support.

Integrated tools for educational facilities intelligence

A Modular Architecture for Educational Facilities Intelligence

Built on a modular, loosely coupled architecture, each application operates independently while securely exchanging information through standardized services. This provides exceptional flexibility, scalability, and resilience, streamlining the flow from raw data collection to actionable intelligence.
